Last January, NeoTV Prime Google TV set-top box was unveiled with a pricetag of $129.9 and now Minix has come up with the Jelly Bean running Minix Neo X7 TV set-top box. This device is built with a good looking chassis and packs some amazing specs and features such as quad-core processor, quad-core graphics, Jelly Bean OS and many more.

It has the specs of a decent Android based tablet PC except for the fact that it has no display instead of which its enhanced with mic jack, IR receiver, Ethernet jack, remote control, external antenna and extra USB ports. Having such satisfactory specs, these Chinese devices encounter a lot of problems in context to the WiFi connectivity.

The box in which the Neo X7 comes, contains Google TV player, HDMI cable, USB cable, power adapter, remote controller, user manual and OTG cable.

OS and Processor

This set-top box runs on the Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean operating system of Google and is powered by a Rockchip RK3188 Quad Core Cortex A9 1.6GHz processor which has a maximum frequency up to 1.8GHz. It is also boosted by a Quad Core ARM Mali 400MP graphics processor delivers clear and bright graphics.

Storage and Connectivity

The device is enabled with 16GB NAND Flash memory along with 2GB DDR3 RAM and has no microSD card slot. In terms of connectivity, it has a lot of features such as dual band Wi-Fi (2.4GHz/5GHz), bluetooth V4.0, SD/MMC card reader (SD 3.0, MMC V4.41), 3 USB 2.0 port and micro USB OTG port.
It is also enabled with RJ-45 Ethernet jack at 10/00Mbps, which supports the sharing of hotspot through Wi-Fi. Additional features include headphone jack, microphone jack, IR receiver and Kensignton lock security hole.

Miscellaneous Features

The Minix Neo X7 has an in-built FTR technology that facilitates the decoding of Flash hardware. The device supports video playing in various formats such as AVI, RMVB, RM, WMV, MKV, MOV, WEBM, MP4, VOB (DVD format), DAT (VCD format), MPG, MPEG, ASF, FLV, TP, TS, 3GP and many more. Likewise, it also supports audio playing in many formats such as WMA, MP3, WMV, OGG, APE, AAC, FLAC, etc.

The most interesting thing about this device is its support for HDMI 1.4a which enables the user to watch 3D movies and full HD videos at 1080p. This Minix set-top box also supports HDMI 1.4a along with Optical S and PDIF AC3 multi-channel viewing. Moreover, the device is boosted by DC 5V and accompanies a 3A adapter.

Verdict

The Minix Neo X7 is an amazing set-top box that features some of the high-end specs along with useful and distinguished features. The processing unit is much stronger while it also has a wide range of connectivity options too. Above all, the Android 4.2 Jelly Bean platform of Google would do wonders while the device is price at a fair price of about $140.
