The Google Android OS is one of the biggest mobile operating systems now, having the highest share in the market. There are more number of Android phone users than the users owning smartphones with the other mobile OS. If you are a new Android user, you should know these facts about it.

Naming of Android versions

The various Android versions are named based on the different desserts, and they go with that in an alphabetical order. The various names given till now are – Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean, KitKat.

Just like the other mobile operating systems, Android OS has its own Google Play Store which has hundreds of thousands of applications in it for the users to either download or purchase.

Yes you heard it right. It was a start-up led by Andy Rubin, before Google acquired it in 2005. Rubin was there in the company till March 2013, after Sundar Pichai took his place.

Nexus is the name given to the smartphones which are sold by Google, although they are manufactured by one of the several smartphone brands. For example, there was Samsung Galaxy Nexus, LG Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 and the different Asus Nexus 7, Nexus 10 tablet devices.

They are trying it. Apple with the iOS and Microsoft with the Windows Phone OS are competing Android, and although the Android OS wasn’t launched before Apple’s mobile OS, the open-source tag made it this famous and a choice for the different smartphone companies.

You really don’t need to worry about the security if you are trying to select a mobile OS based on this, because security wise most of them are the same. At least that is what we feel, after reading out the various security vulnerabilities in all the three main competitors. There are security issues everywhere but the Antivirus programs are always there for the security.

More than just smartphones

If you have chosen an Android smartphone, you did a good job already. Now, you should know that you are using an OS which is used not just in the smartphones but now in different devices, which include smartwatches, smart glasses (Google Glass for example), and other wearable devices such as fitness trackers etc.
